The SMU ensures the obligatory tasks of the Slovak Republic resulting from the membership in the EU, in international metrology organisations as BIPM, CIPM, OIML, EUROMET and in international agreements and treaties in metrology (Metric Convention, MRA) and from juridical prescriptions of the Slovak Republic as well. It takes part in creating the international recommendations, documents and standards within the co-operation with the OIML, ISO a IEC. The SMU participates actively in many international Projects in terms of word-wild  programmes and  programmes of the EU, it organises international meetings and seminars.

The SMU develops successfully the bilateral co-operation (e.g. with the PTB, Germany, the NMi, The Netherlands, the VNIIM in Russia, the ČMI in Czech Republic, the KazInMetr in Kazakhstan, the NISM in Kirghizia, etc.) and the multilateral international co-operation within the regional metrology organisations and other international bodies.
